A slot is a narrow depression or opening, as in a keyway in a piece of machinery or a slit for coins in a vending machine. The term is also used for a position in a group, series, sequence or schedule: I’ve been slotted for a four-o’clock meeting. A slot is also the name of a connector on a computer motherboard that supports expansion cards such as video, audio and RAM slots.
In a slot machine, players insert cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, paper tickets with barcodes. Then they activate a lever or button (either physical or on a touchscreen), which spins the reels and stops them to rearrange symbols. When a winning combination is displayed, the player earns credits according to the pay table. Typical symbols include classic objects such as fruits, bells and stylized lucky sevens. Most modern slot machines are programmed to weight particular symbols. Many states have legalized the use of slot machines, and private ownership is permitted in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia. In some states, such as Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska and South Carolina, the only legal way to own a slot machine is through a casino-owned establishment.
